"At Armentieres in the night of 8/9th December 1916. For conspicious gallantry. He sprang on the parapet beside his Officer, and fired upon a party of raiders until his Lewis gun jammed. He then endeavoured to adjust the mechanism until he fell wounded. It was largely due to his coolness and determination that the raiding party was repulsed."
