"This small ship was sailing along when she heard an air attack being made on a convoy some miles ahead. The Master at once ordered the gunners to stand by, and went himself to a gun position. The German aircraft suddenly approached from the North West, flying at not more than 200 - 300 feet. When the bomber came within range the defence opened fire. The gunners directed the fire so accurately, that after a single run the aircraft began to lose what little height it had. It crashed into the sea about a mile and a half from the ship. She had been machine-gunned, but her resolute defence gave the enemy no chance to make a deliberate bombing attack."
Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE)
