"Alphonse Bergmans, subject of the Netherlands, for outstanding services in the cause of freedom from January 1942 until August 1943 while assisting directly in the successful evasion and escape of more than twenty-five Allied airmen whose planes had been shot down over enemy-occupied territory during the German occupation of Europe. Devoting great energy to the hazardous missions of evacuating Allied airmen, he worked with efficiency and determination to accomplish his aim, constantly demonstrating courage and presence of mind. His contributions were of considerable aid in the prosecution of the war, and his achievements merit the esteem and gratitude of the United Nations."
