"He was baptised as an infant in the Trinity Lutheran Church at Westbrook and later as a youth was confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
He attended Double Lakes school until he finished the eighth grade and later attended the University of Minnesota Farm School.
While attended the famr school he became interested in horticultulture and when he finished his schooling he accepted a position with the Daniel's Nursery near Long Lake, Minnesota, where he worked for almost twenty years.
He answered his country's call, July 12, 1942, and was inducted at Fort Snelling. He took his basic training at Camp Robinson, Arkansas and was then transferred to Camp Claibourne, Louisiana, where he was attached to the 360th Engineers Regiment. He remained there until about June, 1943, when he was sent to the coast and embarked for England, where he was stationed at several different camps.
June 6, 1944, he landed on the beaches of Normandy with his Regiment. From there he went on into France and took part in the liberation of that country. In fact, he received honorable mention in an article about the good work by his regiment, issued by the War Department and published in The Times last summer, shortly after the Invasion."
