He enlisted in 1935 and retired in 1966. He was a radio operator upon enlistment in 1935. His service in the US Navy was originally in Pearl Harbour but later he transferred to the European theatre. There he was in convoys to Murmansk with the British but also a raid on Nazi-occupied Norway, the invasion of North Africa, the D-Day invasion of Normandy and the invasion of southern France. He even served briefly in the Pacific.
He became a commander of the DD-629 USS Abbot in 1961. In October, USS Abbot helped blockade Cuba after President John F. Kennedy announced that Soviet offensive missiles had been discovered there.
