Biography

He was born in Wupperhof in a family of craftsmen. During the First World War he served in the infantry. After this war he studied medicine and eventually became head doctor at the university hospital for gynecology in Kiel.

In 1933 he became a member of the Nazi party. In KZ-Auschwitz conducted research on female fertility hormones (especially progesterone) and their use as fertility treatments. For this he received an honorable mention in 1937. He was given the rank of SS-Gruppenfϋhrer in the reserve.

When the Red Army approached the camp, he left for KZ-Ravensbrϋck so that he could continue his experiments. Russian troops arrested him in 1945.

After the war he was charged in the Soviet Union. The sentence imposed was 25 years. Seven years later he was released as part of an exchange of prisoners of war between Germany and the Soviet Union. He returned to Germany and was reinstated in "his" old clinic, on the basis of his pre-war scientific skills. Bizarre behavior, including openly proclaiming his "discoveries" about the sterilization of women in KZ-Auschwitz, prevented him from living an inconspicuous life. After the general public demanded that he be arrested, the time had come in 1955. But before he could be brought to trial, he died of a heart attack in his cell.
