"One night in November, 1943, this officer piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Berlin. When nearing the target the aircraft was severely damaged. The front of the bomb aimer's compartment was broken off and within a few minutes, Flying Officer Baker's fingers became frostbitten owing to the intense cold caused by the wind blowing through the aperture. Despite this. Flying Officer Baker continued to the target, and afterwards flew the damaged bomber to base. By his skill, endurance and determination, this officer was largely responsible for the safe return of the aircraft and its crew."
