Enlisted in both the Marines (rejected) and U.S. Army (accepted) in 1942. Crull was subsequently trained as driver of a M4A1 Sherman tank. He served in the New Guinea campaign as well in the Leyte Gulf invasion of the Philippine Islands. His final mission was the invasion of Corregidor in February 1945. He was the only survivor of his crew when the Monkey Point tunnel exploded. He was severely wounded and became known as the "tank pilot" due to the fact his tank was blown into the air by the explosion.
