As commander-in-chief of the "Maas Army", Otto von Emmich had the task of taking the fortress of Liège at the beginning of the war. After heavy losses, the capture succeeded on August 7th, 1914 through his decision to attack again the 14th Infantry Brigade, numbering only 1,500 men.
