Ludendorff had been sent to Liege by his mayor, Colonel General von Bülow. The capture of the fortress did not go as planned and the German attackers suffered heavy losses. On August 6, 1914, the commander of the 14th Infantry Brigade, Major General von Wussow, fell and Ludendorff took over the leadership of this brigade. On August 7, 1914, the brigade, numbering only 1,500 men, was again sent to attack the Liège fortress. Ludendorff himself led the front line and played a decisive role in the success.
