Joe flew the first B25 nonstop across the Pacific Ocean.
"They were not sure the planes could make it all the way, and they almost did not. It was very close. The squadron commander came out to the field that day as the took off and wished them well and saw to it that the planes were started and taxied down to the runway and then topped off with gas again right before take off. They did make it or I would not be here. I believe they also carried an extra fuel tank inside the plane." - LaDonna (Hainline) Benedict
Later, he became a flight engineer in the Berlin Airlift. By the end of his career Joe was Chief Master Sergeant. He was the brother of Henry Hainline.
