Before the war John Strawson ran a successful egg merchant business, enabling him to spend time on other activities and he joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve, flying his first solo in June 1938. On the outbreak of war he was recalled from reserve and after further traiining on the Spitfire he was posted to No. 616 Squadron in September 1940. In October he joined 603 Squadron, based at Hornchurch.
On May 10, 1941 he was posted to 260 Squadron at Drem, Scotland but after sailing with HMS Victorious the squadron was posted to the Middle East, operating from Beirut, El Bassa and the Western Desert.
