Biography

Freddie Deeks was a navigator, gunner and bomb aimer who served with no. 110 (Hyderabad) Squadron - operating with Bristol Blenheims from Wattisham, Suffolk.
In November 1941 he was allocated to fly a Blenheim IV to The Middle East. When arriving on Malta it was decided he would not go further and joined no. 107 Squadron for 9 weeks. They were detailed with interrupting the flow of crucial supplies to Rommel's Africa Corps which included bombing shipping in the Mediterranean and transportation on Sicily and in Italy. After the 9 weeks the Blenheim was delivered in Egypt and he returned to the UK and was an instructor for a while at Bicester. In October 1942 he joined no. 88 Squadron equipped with Douglas Boston III's.operating from Oulston in Norfolk and participated in raids such as operation Oyster (attack on the Philips factories in EIndhoven). After his tour was finished with the squadron he was posted to no. 487 (NZ) Squadron, flying the Mosquito.
Deeks completd his third operational tour and 80th war operation by November 1944.
He left the RAF in mid-1946 only to rejoin three years later and joined 52 Squadron in the Far East, serving during the Malayan Emergency.
He retired from the RAF in 1961.
