"Regimental-Sergeant-Major Legg and Lance-Sergeant Hardy displayed exceptional courage when engaged in recovering the dead from the danger area of a minefield, certain of the mines n which had been accidentally exploded.
When they entered the minefield, some of the mines had been disarmed. As a number of mines had been shifted it was impossible to say for certain or not they were in fact exposed to great danger. None the less, with complete disregard for their own personal safety Regimental Sergeant-Major Legg and Lane-Sergeant Hardy entered the minefield and assisted Major Morris in removing the first body. They both carried out their task with extreme coolness and courage and their bearing throughout was of the highest order."
