Arthur Gottschall was a German-Jewish refugee who at first fled to the Netherlands and later evaded to England. He was born on October 8th, 1911 as son to Hermann Gottschall (1878-1942) and Ria (Rebekka) Gottschall-Kahn (1886-1942). He married in Amsterdam with Josephine Delmonte (1918-2014) on May 14th, 1941. Both his parents died in concentrationcamp Auschwitz.
In 1943 he was recuited at the International refugeecamp Gibraltar II on Jamaica for participating in the Prinses Irene Brigade. With this unit and with the alias Arthur Gotschal, he took part in the battles in Normandy and Northwestern Europe. In January 1945 he was wounded when the tank he was in fell over. After visiting the hospital he was placed with the Depot of the Prinses Irene Brigade until he was demoblized.
