Rank: Private, Unit: 6th Bn., King's Own Scottish Borderers. Son of Harry and Edith Kate Gunner, of West Malling, Kent.
On June 15, 1944, the 6th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers landed in Normandy to be deployed almost immediately during Operation Epsom, with the overall aim of capturing Caen. The battalion would get involved in heavy fighting in Normandy and suffer heavy casualties.
After the breakout from Normandy, the battalion advanced rapidly through northern France and Belgium. In Belgium, in mid-September 1944, another heavy battle with heavy casualties followed near the town of Geel and the village of Tenaard.
The battalion also suffered heavy losses during the attack on Best, at the end of September/beginning of October 1944. From October 20 1944, the battalion took part in "Operation Pheasant" where Tilburg was liberated on October 27 1944.
On October 28, the battalion was ordered to urgently prepare to leave for the Peel where the Germans had launched a counter-attack on October 27 at Ospel, Meijel, Neerkant and Liessel.
On November 5 the 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers failed to completely capture the hamlet of Schans and after heavy fighting and heavy casualties the attack was aborted.
The 6th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers even had to be reinforced by A-company (where Herbert served) from the 6th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers to be able to repel a German counter-attack. This was also the day Herbert George Gunner was killed.
