During the Soviet Operation Bagration Oberstleutnant Klasing lost all contact with the higher commands, and thus he decided to break out of the encirclement ring around Bobruisk. Later, during July 1944, he then led a Kampfgruppe of the 134. Infanterie-Division through a ford over a river that he had reconnoitred. After very hard fighting he and his troops were able to make contact with a force of counterattacking German armour. Klasing would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his success in leading so many men to safety despite the difficult circumstances.
