"On 5th May 1919, the enemy bombarded Mala-Beresnik for fifteen hours. During that time he personally repaired his guns under fire, and through his cool example and total disregard for personal danger was able to bring heavy machine-gun fire to bear on the enemy when the barrage lifted, preventing them from advancing from the edge of the wood. He has previously done good work."
