Führer Panzerpionier-Bataillon FGD
Awarded on:
May 2nd, 1945
Awarded for his bravery and leadership achievements during the final battles in Austria in early 1945. Especially during the fighting at Deutsch-Wagram on the 10.04.1945 and at Bisamberg near the end of the same month, Hauptmann Klemt and his Panzerpionieren were able to accomplish multiple important actions that secured the German frontlines.

No indication of an approved award in surviving records in the Federal Archives. An approval of the award, as has been assumed by Fellgiebel and von Seemen - through the head of the Army Personnel Office, General der Infanterie Burgdorf in Berlin - is highly unlikely, since the Führer-Grenadier-Division was employed in Silesia and then Austria starting in March 1945 and not in the Berlin area. A viewing of the files of the Award Commission of the Award Association of the Knight's Cross, which might have led to some clarification, was denied to the author in this case under citation of the Federal Archives Law. Klemt was first published in the 2nd edition of von Seemen with the note: "No proof in the Federal Archives; awarded from the combat sector around Berlin". The information presented there was apparently taken by Spaeter in 1984 and Fellgiebel in 1986.
