German Fire-control Tower Marine Peilstand

This German fire control tower of type ‘Marine Level 3’ was part of the Atlantic Wall on the island of Alderney.

In June 1940, the British Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans. The British government had decided not to defend the islands and civilians who wanted to were hastily evacuated to England. In fact, the island of Alderney was evacuated entirely. Soon the Germans began building defences on the islands, for which thousands of forced labourers from occupied Europe were used.

Locally, this tower is known as ‘The Odeon’ because it resembles the Odeon cinema buildings that the evacuated residents of Alderney had seen during their stay in England. The tower houses an exhibition about the bunker.
