In 1862, during a Confederate attack, over 100 cannonballs were fired into the city and one became lodged into the side of the Depp Building on the town square. In 1887, the building burned down. The cannonball was saved and placed back in the new building, as close as they could approximate to the original location, together with an arrow pointing to it and a metal plaque.
