This memorial is located at the Fort Bledsoe Historical Park. Horace Lawson Hunley (born 29 December 1823) was the designer and funder of the first submarine which was used in a war situation, during the American Civil War. Together with James R. McClintock and Baxter Watson, he first built the Pioneer and later on the CSS Hunley. During a check out dive with the CSS Hunley on 15 October 1863, he drowned, along with the whole crew. Later, on 17 February 1864, the CSS Hunley succeeded to sink the USS Housatoni. The CSS Hunley also sank, for the third and last time.
