Memorial Mina Marx-Stibbe

This memorial commemorates Mina Marx-Stibbe, who lived here. Born on 17 March 1921, she was murdered in the Holocaust.

Mina (Mientje) Stibbe was the eldest daughter of Eduard Stibbe and Mies Bloch.
Eduard and Mies had another son David (Daddy) and a daughter Betsy.
Mientje married Freddy Marx on March 11, 1941. They went to live in Amsterdam.
On August 14, Mientje and Freddy fled and tried to get to Switzerland via Belgium and France. In Belgium, Mientje and Freddy went into temporary hiding and hid in an apartment in Ixelles

After three weeks in hiding in Ixelles, Mientje and Freddy were betrayed.
On September 21, 1942, they were arrested by Gruppe Geheime Feldpolizei 530 and taken to the Saint-Gilles prison.
On February 3, 1943, the Feldkriegsgericht der O.F.K. sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Mientje was transferred to Vorst prison on 11 February and Freddy to Merksplas prison. For a short time Freddy was sent to a labor camp in Emsland, but returned to Merksplas. After a while Mientje was transferred to the Strafgefängnis of Munich-Stadelheim where she arrived on August 18, 1943.
When the 18-month term expired, Mientje was released from Stadelheim prison and taken to the Polizei Präsidium in Munich, where she remained until the end of June 1944.
In early January 1945 Mientje was seen for the last time in Birkenau where she worked in the weaving mill and was evacuated when the Soviet army approached Auschwitz.
Freddy was deported to Auschwitz via Mechelen. Freddy was in Auschwitz for four weeks when he was put to work in the Laurahütte (Kattowitz) where he worked for eight months on the assembly of cannons.

Via camp Güsen, Freddy ended up in Gröditz, to work in the Lauchhammer factory of the Mitteldeutsche Stahlwerke GmbH.
According to witnesses, Freddy was last seen in late April 1945, where he was evacuated towards Dresden.

The death of Mientje and Freddy could not be established by a death certificate. In July 1953, a suspected death report was made in the population registers and then published in the Belgian Official Gazette.
