The Elihu Benjamin Washburne House, also known as the Washburne-Sheehan House, was owbed by Elihu Benjamin Washburne (1816–1887), a well-known American politician and diplomat.
He was a member of the Congress during the American Civil War and had close friendships with the presidents Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.
During the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), he was ambassador in France where he became known for diplomatic integrity and his humanitarian support of Americans, other neutrals and Germans in France. He was also strongly involved in talks between the French and the Germans. For this, he received formal praise and awards from the governments in both France and Germany.
