Shirley House

This is the only original building remaining inside Vicksburg National Military Park. On 18 May 1863, Confederate soldiers were ordered to burn all the houses in front of their works. The Shirley barns and outbuildings were quickly burned to the ground, but the soldier assigned to destroy the house was shot before he could apply the torch.
Adeline Shirley, her son Quincy and several servants hided in a chimney corner for three days when there were heavy fights around the house. They were finally evecuated by Union soldiers.
The house was named "white house" by the Union soldiers.
