Carter Farm stood directly behind the Union trenches and is pock marked with over 1000 bullet impacts from the Second Battle of Franklin. One of the residents, CSA Captain Tod Carter, attacked the Northern line from the south and was mortally wounded during the Second Battle of Franklin. He would die at his home, two days later.
The Second Battle of Franklin was the frontal attack, over open terrain, on the strong Northern defenses in Franklin, on 30 November 1864. The attack, the largest single attack in the American Civil War, failed. Of the 19,000 Confederate soldiers, 1750, including six generals, were killed and 3800 were wounded.
