Carnton House

The Carnton House served as the largest field hospital in the area for hundreds of wounded and dying Confederate soldiers. On the morning of 1 December 1864, the bodies of four Confederate generals killed during the fighting, Patrick R. Cleburne, Hiram B. Granbury, John Adams and Otho F. Strahl, lay on Carnton’s back porch.
The house is now a museum. The floors of the restored house are still stained with the blood of the men who were treated here.

The Second Battle of Franklin was the frontal attack, over open terrain, on the strong Northern defenses in Franklin, on 30 November 1864. The attack, the largest single attack in the American Civil War, failed. Of the 19,000 Confederate soldiers, 1750, including six generals, were killed and 3800 were wounded.

For current visiting hours, please visit the website of the museum.
