Historical Marker: The Cotton Gin Assault

The Cotton Gin Assault, was one of the most intense fights during the Second Battle of Franklin, between US Brigadier General James Reilly's division and CS Major General Patrick Cleburne's division. Four Confederate generals were killed in this area.

The Second Battle of Franklin was the frontal attack, over open terrain, on the strong Northern defenses in Franklin, on 30 November 1864. The attack, the largest single attack in the American Civil War, failed. Of the 19,000 Confederate soldiers, 1750, including six generals, were killed and 3800 were wounded.
