This memorial commemorates the units of the Army of the Mississippi, involved in the Battle of Perryville.
The Battle of Perryville, also known as the Battle of Chaplin Hills, took place on 8 October 1862. It was the biggers and bloodiest battle in Kentucky. The battle resulted in a tactical Confederate victory but also in a strategic Union victory.
In the battle, in total about 1,400 men were killed and 5,600 wounded. About 700 soldiers were missing or captured.
