Memorial Drummer of Arcole

This memorial commemorates André Estienne (1777-1838), born in Cadenet. He is known as the Drummer of Arcole (Tambour d'Arcole). At the Battle of Arcole in the First Coalition War, on 15 november 1796, he and others swam across the river and made so much noise behind the Austrian lines that the Austrians thought they were under attack from that side and they left their strong defensive line.
