Ellis Island

Ellis Island has been an immigration station where millions of immigrants entered the United States. Also in the Second World War it operated as an immigration station, but it was expanded with an internment camp for Americans of Japanese, German or Italian ancestry and immigrants detained for fear of spying. In total, about 7,000 people were interned here. The island also operated as a U.S. Coast Guard base.

Nowadays, Ellis Island is part of the Liberty Island National Historic Site and it is open to the public. The important building are renovated, but not all buildings.
