This is the grave of the soldier Christian Gottlieb Berger, killed in action in the Battle of Großgörschen. He is buried were he fell. It is the only known field-grave of a soldier from the Napoleonic Wars.
The Battle of Lützen/Großgörschen occurred on 2 May 1813 between the French army and Prussian/Russian troops and resulted in a victory for the French. On the French side, the losses to about 20,000 men (dead or wounded), on the Prussian/Russian side approximately 11,500 men.
