Maria Bellido, resident of Bailén, took part to the Battle of Bailén, on 19 July 1808, by bringing water to the Spanish soldiers. A bullet fractured the jar of water she was taking to General Castaños, Commander-in-Chief. Undeterred, she went on and brought him the little water left in the debris of the jar.
Bailén's Coat of Arms features a holed jar in remembrance of this act of bravery.
