From October 1915, Joe English (Bruges 5/8/1882 - Veurne 31/8/1918), painter and designer of the Heldenhuldezerkje for fallen Flemish soldiers, stayed in the Diocesan College of Veurne. He had been assigned by the army to the services of Dr. Daels who had been commissioned to develop gas masks for the Belgian soldiers.
In October 1917 he was appointed to the Artistic Department of the Belgian army. He does not paint scenes from the front, but scenes behind the front. His series on Veurne "Mystische Stad" is well known.
Joe English died in the night of August 30 to 31, 1918, at the age of 36 years in the field hospital "Océan II" in Vinkem from appendicitis.
