Missouri Units (Union) Monument

This memorial in the Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates the following units from Missouri, involved in the Siege of Vicksburg.

3rd Missouri Infantry
12th Missouri Infantry
17th Missouri Infantry
27th Missouri Infantry
29th Missouri Infantry
30th Missouri Infantry
31st Missouri Infantry
32nd Missouri Infantry

At the Siege of Vicksburg, from 18 May to 4 July 1863, about 77,000 Northern soldiers under command of Major General Ulysses S. Grant fought against 33,000 Southern soldiers. The battle ended with the surrender of Vicksburg and almost 30,000 Confederates. Victory here and at Port Hudson gave the Union control of the Mississippi River. The Union lost 4835 men (dead, wounded or missing), the Confederates 3202 men.
