Stumbling Stones Bucherstraße 10

These Stolpersteine / Stumbling Stones commemorate:

* Dr. Ignatz Steinhardt, born 1869, humiliated / deprived of rights, dead 2 January 1933.
* Henriette Steinhardt née Wertheim, born 1882, deported 1942 to Izbica, murdered.
* Pauline Steinhardt, born 1905, fled 1934 to Italy, 1936 to Palestine.
* Dorothea Steinhardt, born 1912, fled 1934 to Italy, 1936 to Palestine.

Dr. Ignatz Steinhardt and Henriette Johanna (Henny) Wertheimer married and had 2 children. Both children fled Germany in their 20s the year after their father died and went first to Italy and then to Palestine. Their mother remained in Nürnberg and was deported in 1942 at age 60.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
