Text at the memorial
The concrete structure that you see is a remnant of a 'farm hangar'. At this air field, constructed by the Germans, were 43 hangars of which 9 were farm hangars. The latter were called as such, because windows and doors were painted on the outside walls and they also had a roof. This was done to camouflage their function as a hangar. The effect was mostly stopped by the fact that there were tracks for the planes towards the hangars.
In September 1944 the receding Germans tried to disuse the air field for the allies. They did this by blowing up the hanagers. Only this skeleton and a hanger besides the road to Mill are left behind. This farm hangar on the Zeelandsedijk was T-shaped, had a widt of 44 meters and a depth of 26.5 meters. It sheltered a two-engined JU-88 night fighter and two or three Bf109 single-engined fighters.
