The monument to Willem van der Bij was established in memory of the director of the primary school at the Brugstraat.
Willem van der Bij was born on April 18, 1897 in Berlikum. He was the head of the Christian primary school in Joure from 1929 to 1944. Van der Bij was a member of the National Organization for help to people in hiding in the municipality of Haskerland (now De Fryske Marren). He was a principled man, who said exactly how he thought about society. He was not thanked by the occupier. He was arrested in the night of 1 to 2 February 1944. He died in the concentration camp Neuengamme on November 23, 1944 and was buried at the Dutch field of honor of Friedhof an der Seelhorst in Hanover.
