On the N.H. Cemetery is the war memorial of Frans Andries Gerbens. His name is commemorated by means of a text on the family grave.
Frans Andries Gerbens was born on July 20, 1904 in Menaldum. In 1931 he left with his wife Annie Mus to the former Dutch East Indies, where Gerbens became a master of law at the Ministry of Justice. During the Japanese invasion in 1941 his place was Batavia. Mr. Gerbens fought as 1st Lieutenant against the occupier until the capitulation of Java on 9 March 1942. As a prisoner of war, Gerbens worked on the Burma railway, among other places, until he died in Pelang Kasi in Thailand due to illness on 31 March 1943. Frans Gerbens was buried at the Dutch Field of Honor Kanchanaburi in Thailand (picture 4).
