Greenbrier Hotel

This hotel was one of the four remote and luxury hotels leased in 1941 and 1942 by the US Government to house enemy diplomats and their families until they could be exchanged for American diplomats and their families who were being held in enemy hands.
From September 1942 on, the hotel was an Army military hospital, named Ashford General Hospital, with 2025 beds. There was also the only prisoner-of-war camp of West Virginia, for 680 POWs who worked in the hospital.
During the Cold War, an enormous nuclear shelter was built beneath a new wing of the hotel, to house the entire Congress in the case of a nuclear attack. Nowadays, this bunker can be visited.
