The 138th Rifle Brigade held a piece of city between 17 October and 21 December 1942 of 700 meters wide and 400 meters deep. This area became known as Lyudnikov's Island. General I. Lyudnikov was commander of this division and had his headquarters in this half-destroyed building.
A memorial stone has been erected in front of the ruins and contains the following text:
"In this house, the headquarters of the 138th Red Banner-rifle Division was located."
