Stumbling Stones Veldstraat Gent

Three relatives of the Ghent Jewish family Bloch: Sophie Loeb-Bloch, Margueritte Bloch and Marcel Levy.
The Ghent Jewish community had some 260 members at the start of the war.
Some families decided to leave the country immediately after the German invasion.
The Bloch family also fled, grandmother Sophie, her daughter Margueritte and her husband Marcel after.
According to Sophie, flights were not necessary, she knew the Germans of the First World War and knew how to deal with them.
But she got wrong.
Margueritte and Marcel were deported in 1942 via the Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen.
Seventy-year-old Sophie was deported in January 1943.
