Text on the Monument:
IN MEMORIAM
1940
AT THE END OF THIS YEAR
WE REMEMBER THOSE OF OUR FRIENDS,
HAVE FALLEN IN THE SACRIFICATION OF THE D'TERRIBLE HURRICANE,
WHO ALSO DID OUR COUNTRY GO INTO WAR.
WE KNOW WHO OF US HAVE FIGHTED;
WHO OF THEM ARE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE PARENTAL HOUSE AGAIN.
WE ALSO KNOW...AND THAT REMAINS IN OUR HEARTS,
THAT THREE OF OUR BLUE AND WHITE FRIENDS HAVE GONE.
IT WAS SEPTEMBER '37 THAT YOU GOOD POSTMA, FULL OF CONFIDENCE
GOING TO BUILD FOR THE FUTURE.
IT WAS MARCH 6, 1940, WHEN WE READ OF THE HORRIBLE EVENT,
THAT MADE US, IN YOU, REGRET A FRIEND.
IT WAS SEPTEMBER '39, THE HELL OF WAR HAD BONE,
WHEN YOU, GERRIT SCHOOTSTRA, IN THE SERVICE OF OUR COUNTRY,
WAS CALLED UP TO TAKE PART
OF THE ARMY, WHICH WAS TO GUARD OUR COUNTRY.
IT WAS MAY 10, 1940, AND THE FIGHT raged here too.
IT WAS MAY 1940 YOU FALLEN FOR US.
DEATH DROPPED YOUR FUTURE AND HAPPINESS
AND BREAKE YOUR BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LIFE.
IT WAS OCTOBER '39 WHEN YOU WERE LEAVING US, GERRIT KASPERSMA
TO JOIN THE ARMY OF THE COUNTRY'S SOLDIERS.
BUT THE CONTACT WITH YOUR FRIENDS REMAINED,
BECAUSE YOU HAD TO GO TO LEEUWARDEN.
IT WAS MAY 1940 WHEN YOU...FELL LIKE A HERO
FOR US; IN SACRIFICE TO WAR VIOLENCE.
WHY DID YOU GO FROM US;
TO NEVER STAND NEXT TO US AGAIN?
WHY WERE THOSE WOUNDS BEAT?
WHY DOES HE SUFFER THAT?
WHY DID HE LET THAT WAR HELL SEE;
AND THOSE GREAT MISSES HAPPEN?
WHY DID HE CALL THOSE UNFORGETTABLE FRIENDS,
AWAY FROM THEM WHO LOVED THEM?
WE DO NOT KNOW,
BUT HIS WILL BE DONE.
AND FOR COMFORT BE THIS WORD:
THEY HAVE GONE TO A CLEANER PLACE.
TO THE PORT ON THE SEA OF WAR.
THE PLACE OF ETERNAL PEACE.
