Death Row and Execution Pole Town Hall Poperinge

Holding cells and execution post in the town hall & square.

Over 3,000 allied soldiers were sentenced to death by execution for desserting their posts or acts of cowardice in the First World War. Only 346 were actually executed. 69 were executed in the westhoek region. 25 British and 2 Canadian soldiers were executed in Poperinge.

The British ministry of defence have offered pardons to all those Commonwealth soldiers executed during the First World War, saying they are one of many victims of the war and the executions are not the fate they deserved.
