Bunker remains, north of Schmithof, on top of a hill and usefully marked by a lone tree growing on it! It overlooks the junction of the B258, Monschauerstrasse and Schleidenerstrasse, which leads off north towards Friesenrath and Walheim. The road also crosses a bridge over a tributary of the Inde river at this point, where you can find other bunker remains.
These fortifications are part of the Westwall or Siegfried Line fortifications - the section west and south of Aachen is called the Scharnhorst Line and faces the Belgian border about 2 km to the south-west.
The US 3rd Armoured Division of VII Corps assaulted this section on 13 September 1944 at the start of the advance up the 'Stolberg Corridor', prior to the encirclement of Aachen.
