Memorial "Battle By Hoogstraten 11 January 1814" Minderhout

A Memorial was unveiled on 14 december 2014 for the St. Clement Church in Minderhout in memory of the Battle of Hoogstraten on 11 january 1814.

On January 11, 1814, an icy winter day, heavy fighting took place in the Noorderkempen between the troops of the French emperor Napoleon I and an allied army corps consisting mainly of Prussia, British and Cossacks. Since the coalition troops arrived from North Brabant over a broad front, the combat zone actually extended from Kalmthout to Turnhout. The main objective of the Allied offensive was the fortress of Antwerp. Fighting took place for hours in various places, including in Wuustwezel, Loenhout and Malle, but the focus was on the French positions at Hoogstraten and some of our boroughs (Wortel, Meer and especially Minderhout). On the allied side, more than 500 men died on that one day, on the French side almost 900 were lost.
