Stumbling Stones / Stolpersteine commemorate:
* Gottfried Hollander, born 1876, deported 1943, Auschwitz, lost, presumed dead.
* Lotty Hollander née Guttmann, born 1888, deported 1943, Auschwitz, lost, presumed dead.
Dr. Gottfried Hollander and Lotty Guttmann were married. From 1919 they lived in a 6-room apartment here at Oranienburger Straße 2-5. He practiced law as a public notary and legal counsel. She worked in forced labor at the Graetz metal fabrication and electronics firm in Berlin until Jewish laborers were deported to Auschwitz as part of the Nazis' "Factory Action." Gottfried was deported on 1 March 1943; Lotty on 12 March 1943.
"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntary residence of (mostly Jewish) victims who were murdered by the Nazis. Each plaque is engraved with the victim’s name, date of birth, and place (mostly a concentration camp) and date of death. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
