Villa Hügel is the birth house of Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach. Krupp was an industrialist and convicted war criminal. On 13 August 1940, Hitler personally awarded Gustav Krupp the Gold medal of the NSDAP at the entrance of the villa.
Some parts of the villa were used to house members of the British Control Commission, Germany (CCG) during 1946.
