Before World War 2 in Krāslava lived more than 1,000 Jews. They formed the largest ethnic group. During the war most of them were killed. From the beginning of the Nazi occupation of Krāslava the Jewish civilians were arrested by local militias and imprisoned in two synagogues and adjacent buildings. On 26 July 1941 they were taken by the Nazi's to the ghetto of Daugavpils. 40 of them were killed on the way.
In August a few hundred of Jews were arrested of which a part was executed by local militias and police. Executions took place at the nearby Augustovka ravine and along the shore of the river Daugava.
After the war the recovered bodies were reburied at the Jewish cemetery. A monument was placed here "in remembrance of the victims of Fascism".
