Memorial Victims Firestorms Cemetery Friedhof Ohlsdorf Hamburg

This Friedhof Ohlsdorf Cemetery in Hamburg has many War Graves and Monuments from the First and Second World Wars as well as from the Franco-German War. There is also a separate section for the Jewish Cemetery.

This monument commemorates the victims who died in bombing raids in World War II. For the most part, these include people who died during Operation Gomorrah. During a series of bombings on Hamburg between 24-7 and 3-8-1943, firestorms ensued and an estimated 40,000 people died.

The name of the monument reads "Sailing over the Styx" a depicts a scene from Greek mythology with the death ferryman Charon and his boat. The monument is complemented by 18 oak beams bearing the names of the affected residential areas. These beams were placed above the mass graves dug by prisoners from Neuengamme containing 36,918 victims.
